Four Causes and Treatments for Acne

Did you know that nearly 80% of people will experience some type of acne at some point in their lives?  Acne is the most common skin disorder in the United States.  While it might not be curable, it's certainly treatable and manageable.  Are you one of the 60 million Americans affected by acne?   acne causes and treatments

Common Causes + Solutions for Acne

+Hormonesacne while pregnant

Hormone imbalance is a major contributor to adolescent and adult acne.  It can be brought on by a number of elements, including pregnancy, puberty, diet and natural changes in body chemistry.  Ladies - the hormonal shift we experience 1-2 weeks before our monthly cycle can contribute to an increase in breakouts as well.

Tip to Treat: This is tough one, as hormone challenges are case by case scenarios.  We suggest consulting with a skincare professional, but some options may include topical treatments, change in diet, and all-natural medication.

+Clogged Pores & Bacteria

Pores can become clogged by a number of sources.  The main clogging culprits include dirt, oil, dead skin cells and free radicals.  Our natural production of oil mixed with dirt and dead skin cause those annoying, tough-to-clear blackheads.

Tip to Treat: With proper tools and dedication, you can control this issue.  Wash your face morning and night, use clean makeup and makeup brushes, avoid touching your face and wash your hands throughout the day.  Be sure to keep pillow cases clean, cell phones sanitized, and cleanse skin before and after working out or sweating excessively.

+Dietantioxidant foods

Excessive intake of sugars, processed dairy and hormone-riddled meat can all play a part in the development of acne.

Tip to Treat: Foods rich in anti-oxidants, such as blueberries, nuts and vegetables, fight against free radicals (which clog pores and contribute to breakouts).  Drinking plenty of water will help flush toxins as well.  You are what you eat!

+Genetics

Unfortunately, many people suffer from skin disorders (including acne) that are simply hereditary.  The good news is, thanks to developments in skincare and technology, most of these issues can be treated one way or another.

Tip to Treat: Start with a visit to a skincare professional.  They can make recommendations for professional procedures and at-home treatments that will help you manage your current situation and prevent future breakouts.
